Embark College welcomed experts from government, business and research to take part in its “Shaping the Future of Labour: Insights from Policy and Industry Leaders.” It gave a valuable opportunity to assess the major changes underway in the worldwide labour market. Taking place on campus, the session focused on possible future impacts of law changes, new computer developments and economic changes on our jobs.

A variety of important topics were discussed by participants, with artificial intelligence, automation, digital growth, new working models and the gig economy all being mentioned. There was also discussion about how education and skills programs can give future employees what they need to be flexible and successful. Many discussed the ways businesses and governments can jointly focus on making growth inclusive, helping everyone keep their jobs and managing equality in sharing the opportunities available.
Embark College proved once again to be a central point for people to collaborate and share ideas about important workforce matters. Thanks to the event, students and faculty interacted with experts, while the college highlighted its role in getting learners ready for changing career situations. Moving towards the future, Embark College continues to build areas that lead to impactful talks and improvements for the workplace of tomorrow.

Also during the session, experts explained how remote jobs, freelancing and gig work became common. While flexible work and additional opportunities to earn income were a good aspect, many said these jobs lacked real protections, secure jobs and career opportunities for the long term. Many at the conference believed that laws and policies should be updated to guarantee that all types of employees can earn fair pay, receive benefits and develop their skills.

It was widely accepted that strong education and training were key to the evolution of this field. The experts agreed that better cooperation between schools and workplaces is key to ensuring classes prepare students for jobs now and in the future. Attendees discussed and shared examples showing how combining hands-on learning, internships and technology in courses works well. It became highly apparent that making education more reachable and friendly for people from marginalized communities is needed due to the difficulties they experience in getting high-quality education and the chance to have successful careers.

Besides reviewing the trends above, the conversation also touched on wider challenges, for example, unequal incomes, people’s changing numbers and climate-change effects. People urged that job planning involve all areas, not only productivity, but also the quality of employee life, psychological health, the environment and societal fairness. Participants recognized that bringing together government, business and community efforts is important for a more adaptable and prepared labour market.
The event at Embark College showed the college taking a leading role in the national debate on work and workforce development. With this event, students and faculty had a unique occasion to interact with policymakers and business people who shared important information about future trends. The college was also more committed to pioneering new educational approaches and giving students the ability to face and steer change in their careers.

While labour conditions develop, Embark College stays true to its mission of supporting students in using what they learn in the real world. Thanks to initiatives like the roundtable, the college helps create spaces where major challenges are met, new solutions are shared and the groundwork is built for a future of work that is more adaptable, inclusive and fair.
